This workshop is an introduction to Dialectical Behaviour Therapy [DBT] intended for mental health and community services professionals. Methods of instruction include lecture, videotapes of treatment, and practice exercises to teach the principles and strategies of DBT. It focuses on providing effective treatment to individuals who:

Meet criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD)

Are chronically suicidal and self-injurious

Have multiple diagnoses and severe dysfunctional behaviours

Are high-utilisers of mental health resources
The workshop will discuss:

A dialectical biosocial theory of borderline personality disorder (BPD) used to guide treatment planning

DBT treatment targets and how to structure treatment for individuals at high risk for life-threatening behaviours

Treatment strategies used in all modes of DBT, including individual psychotherapy, psycho-educational skills training, and telephone coaching
